Dogs Rescued from White County, TN Puppy Mill
February 11, 2009 the White County Sheriff Department, working with District Attorney Randy York, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Humane Society on an investigation that began almost two years ago, took custody of 285 dogs from a residence on Lost Creek Road in Sparta, TN.
On February 15, 2009 Pomeranians rescued from the Sparta puppy mill raid were transferred by the ASPCA to South Paw Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, Inc. in Gainesboro, TN...
And this is their story....
Life in the mill... pictures from the scene...

Donations that were made to the ASPCA and the White County Sheriff went towards the expense of the puppymill raid and temporary holding area and were therefore not passed on to us with the dogs we received from this puppy mill.
We will have substantial veterinary expenses to get these dogs healthy and ready for adoption. They all needed vaccinations, heartworm tests, grooming, flea/tick preventatives, heartworm preventatives, spay/neuter, and some needed xrays, testing, and further care. Several are still receiving veterinary care.
Please consider making a donation to help our rescue today!

Their first full day of freedom was bath day. They all got bathed, brushed, nails cut, and knots and matts cut off. They feel MUCH better! And now, they need names!
So here they are after their baths and with names. Probably the first name they have ever had. Clean and a nice meal. Everyone ate very well.
after baths and grooming....

We spent the day getting to know all the dogs. There were lots of firsts for them today.... they heard the phone ring, they saw and heard a tv, saw an oven in use, etc. All the little things we take for granted that mill dogs have never experienced.

The dogs each got a collar and ID tag put on. Angelina is enjoying hanging out with Bella, Lara, and Honey. Parker's eyes aren't as red, the girls are enjoying their soft beds. The boys are marking everywhere at this point. We're working to get them appointments asap to get neutered. Three go tomorrow.
February 19. 2009
Up early in the morning to take Rocky, Chief, and Romeo to the vet. Back home and then off to the vet's to have Parker's eyes looked at and get xrays of Preston. Parker's hair loss around his eyes isn't mange, which is great news! The hair loss is from the conditions he was living in, so it should grow back in with good care, good food, and a clean environment. Preston has no broken bones, so that's great news too!!!!!!

Up early this morning to pick up the three boys and to drop Simba off at the vets to get neutered. Romeo, Rocky, and Chief did very well for their vetting. They are neutered and up to date on their vaccines and all are healthy! They were tested for heartworms too and are heartworm free. They are back home and resting while they heal from surgery.
February 21, 2009
Simba is home from the vet's and doing very well after his neuter. He's resting up and healing from his surgery. He is now neutered, up to date on all vaccines and is free of any parasites. He got a clean bill of health and is a wonderful boy!
The dogs got to see groceries for the very first time! One of the foster moms went grocery shopping and the dogs were right there to check everything out when she brought it inside! It was very exciting for them!
February 22, 2009
The boys have stopped peeing on each other and their food dishes. All of the dogs have learned to eat off of a dish now, instead of wanting to eat off the floor. We haven't had any more fights between the boys since some of them were neutered. Looks like the hormones are beginning to calm down.
Sunny somehow got her collar in her mouth. We caught the problem right away and adjusted the collar so it can't happen again. We took a look at Sunny's teeth and see that she desperately needs her teeth cleaned. Angelina needs her teeth cleaned also. We'll be looking at everyone's teeth now to see who needs dentals.
The dogs have all learned not to drink all their water in one shot. The first several days when we gave them water they all fought to drink it all right up til it was gone. Now they drink at their leisure, probably because they have plenty of water now.
And the bad news for today.... the washer broke. That's a BIG problem!
