"In the world we are identified by a position. But in the world of spiritual wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, we are identified as jewels (Malachi 3:17). A jewel is defined as a precious stone, one that is highly esteemed (valued). Of all the labels that people use to identify who I am, none can compare to being called a jewel by my creator" ~author unknown

PLEASE NOTE: Jewel is a sanctuary dog. She is only available for possible adoption to someone with medical experience with her condition and training experience due to her very special needs and behavioral issues. If an appropriate home with experience applies to adopt her we will gladly consider adoption for Jewel.

In March 2007, before South Paw Rescue was even "born", our co-founders rescued a litter of Australian Cattle Dogs from a kill shelter in Northwest Florida. They were about to be euthanized due to shelter over-crowding.

Most of the puppies were adopted quickly. Two weren’t adopted quickly. One was named Jewel, and one was named Jada.

Jewel and Jada were spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Jewel and Jada were beautiful, healthy, and happy girls. They were both very happy go lucky, got along well with people and other animals.

In September 2007, with the assistance of an experienced cattledog person, Jewel and Jada, both 9 months old, are adopted together to a forever home. This should be the end of the rescue story and Jewel and Jada should live their lives happily ever after in their adoptive home. But that's not what happened.

We don't know all that has happened to Jewel in the time she was away from us. We are told her adopter passed away. From there we don't know the truth about all that happened, and probably never will. So you might be wondering how in the world did Jewel ever get back to us? Well, it is a very long story and really nothing short of a miracle that we have her back here with us. We won't bore you with the long version of what happened... essentially Jewel has a microchip and when one of our co-founders got a call that Jewel was in Miami she drove down and got her. Jewel is now safe, happy, and she is being very well cared for. We're very sad that she is now ill, but we will do everything possible for this precious girl. You can see in the photos of Jewel what she looked like as a puppy, what she looked like before she left us, and how she came back to us so very very thin. Our once happy-go-lucky girl now has some serious health issues, including Ehrlichiosis. Jewel also has some emotional issues due to what happened to her. She is fearful of other dogs now, which she never was before. In time we hope we can work thru this issue. We are giving her lots of attention and love. Jewel is very special to us!

For more information about Ehrlichia go to www.peteducation.com

Ehrlichia are transmitted by ticks. If treated early, the prognosis is good. If treatment is not received early, and the dog gets into the advanced stages, the prognosis is poor. We are doing everything we can for Jewel to have a good outcome. Please keep her in your prayers. Jewel is in need of sponsors to help provide for her medical care and treatment.
